Asset protection: your wealth already has an architecture. The question is whether it was planned
How you hold your assets can matter as much as what they are worth.
Asset protection is not a product. It is a structure. All wealth is already legally organized in some way, even when that was never planned: real estate has owners, companies have partners, investments have holders, and trusts have settlors, trustees, and beneficiaries.
The way that ownership is organized directly influences your exposure.

Asset protection is not about hiding assets or making them untouchable. It is about reducing exposure, separating risk, organizing ownership, and preserving wealth.
Two common misconceptions
"A trust means asset protection": in Florida, for example, assets held in certain revocable trusts may remain subject to the settlor's creditors. The type of trust and its purpose matter.
"An LLC protects everything": an LLC can separate certain business liabilities from personal ones, but protection depends on the structure, the members, and the circumstances. The legal detail matters.
Risk architecture
A sound analysis considers four questions:
Who owns each asset
Where it is located
What risk it carries
How it will be transferred in the future
It is not about a single tool, but about the whole. And there is a decisive factor that is often overlooked: timing. Planning before a problem arises is very different from reorganizing wealth after the risk already exists.

The Brazil and United States layer
For Brazilians living in the United States or holding assets on U.S. soil, there is a further layer: Global Tax. A structure can work legally and, at the same time, create tax consequences or reporting obligations.
Protection, taxation, and succession need to work together.
Sophisticated wealth requires sophisticated planning
If you own companies, real estate, or investments between Brazil and the United States, it may be time to understand whether your wealth architecture is aligned with your goals. Talk to Piquet Law Firm's Global Tax & Trusts team.
